In the Gospel of Mark, chapter 13, we find ourselves in the midst of Jesus' profound discourse on the end times, delivered during the final week of His earthly ministry. This passage, known as the Olivet Discourse, presents us with a stark reminder that the end of the world as we know it is not just a matter of speculation or the stuff of thrilling apocalyptic tales, but a future reality that God has already set in motion. As Jesus describes the signs and the birth pangs leading up to His return, we're invited not into fear, but into a deep reflection on our role and readiness as His followers.

In this crucial moment of anticipation, our focus should not be on the exact timing of these events but on our calling in the midst of them. The world around us may indeed show signs of turmoil and distress—wars, earthquakes, famines—all these are but the beginning of birth pangs. Yet, amidst these, our mission remains unchanged. We are called to steadfastness, to guard against deception, and to proclaim the Gospel with urgency. This is not a time for retreat but for engagement, empowered by the Holy Spirit to share the hope of salvation through Jesus Christ. As we live in these times, may we do so with a renewed commitment to fulfill the Great Commission, bearing witness to the truth of the Gospel until the day of His return.
