Forgetting What Lies Behind
You're running a race, and if you turn around to look behind you, you'll slow down or stumble. That's the picture Paul paints in Philippians 3 about the Christian life. We're called to forget what lies behind and press forward to the prize, which is Christ Himself. Paul isn't telling us to pretend our past didn't happen or to get amnesia about our hurts and failures. Instead, He's calling us to make a deliberate choice to stop letting those things define us or determine our direction. Whether it's old failures, past grievances against others in the church, or even former accomplishments we're proud of, Paul counts them all as loss compared to knowing Christ Jesus as Lord.
Here's the challenge for us today. We're running this race as a team, and we can't reach our full speed while we're carrying the weight of what lies behind. Our confidence belongs in Christ, not in the flesh. Our direction should be fixed on Him, and our minds should be set on heavenly things, not earthly ones. When we truly grasp that our citizenship is in heaven and that Jesus awaits us at the finish line, everything else fades away. The grievances, the hurts, and the old identity we cling to all become lightweight compared to the surpassing glory of Christ. So lay down those burdens. Stretch toward the goal. Press on together toward the prize that awaits us, Christ Jesus Himself.
