Divorce
Marriage rates are declining and divorce rates are high in our culture today. However, statistics show born again Christians who regularly attend church have much lower divorce rates and happier marriages. In Mark 10, Jesus is tested by the Pharisees on divorce. He points back to God's original plan in Genesis - for one man and woman to become one flesh in a lifelong covenant. Jesus emphasizes this covenant is not to be broken by man. Jesus' teaching was revolutionary in a culture where divorce was common and acceptable. God is the Lord of marriage, not man. What should believers do when sin enters a marriage? For marriages between two believers, the goal is always reconciliation, with divorce only permitted in cases of adultery. For marriages where one spouse is an unbeliever, the goal is to preserve the marriage if the unbelieving spouse consents. However, if the unbeliever departs, the believing spouse is free to divorce and remarry a believer. God's grace and healing are available even after divorce. The church should uphold marriage and extend grace to those affected by divorce. Accountability to God's word on marriage is called for, as well as offering forgiveness and restoration when relationships are broken.
